There might be industry standards in the future – like an agreed-upon protocol or language structure for AI-to-AI communication, to maintain interoperability and auditability.
Negotiation and Cooperation: AI agents could negotiate deals much faster than humans. Imagine smart grid energy agents from different companies negotiating electricity prices every hour based on supply and demand – they could reach equilibrium in seconds. They might also enforce contracts amongst themselves using concepts like blockchain, where agreements between AI agents are automatically recorded and executed. On the cooperation side, AI agents might form teams on the fly. For example, in disaster response, a surveillance drone’s AI could coordinate with a rescue robot’s AI and a traffic control AI to collectively respond – effectively negotiating a plan (drone will map area, robot will navigate to victims, traffic AI will clear a route for ambulances). These interactions could be very beneficial, leading to emergent teamwork that’s too complex for humans to micromanage.

This is a broad question because AI agents will likely touch every aspect of society, from how we work to how we interact with each other. Let’s break down a few major long-term impacts:
Jobs and Work: Perhaps the most immediate societal concern is employment. As AI agents become capable of doing tasks that humans used to do, there will be job displacement. We’ve already touched on this with some stats and examples. Reiterating, the World Economic Forum estimated a churn: tens of millions of jobs may be lost to automation by mid-2020s, but also a slightly larger number created. The net might be positive, but that’s little comfort if your job is one of those replaced. Historically, technology has always created new types of jobs (who knew “app developer” would be a huge career 30 years ago?), so new roles will emerge – many likely related to developing, managing, and interfacing with AI (like AI ethicist, AI maintenance expert, data trainers, etc.). However, one long-term concern is: what if AI agents eventually handle almost all routine and even complex labor? Would there be enough new kinds of jobs that only humans can do? Some people foresee a future where work as we know it is greatly reduced – which could be positive if managed well (people working fewer hours for the same pay, more time for leisure or creative pursuits) or negative if managed poorly (mass unemployment and greater inequality).

Perhaps individuals might own personal AI agents that earn money for them (for example, you own an AI that designs graphics and you rent its service out – a form of “capital” anyone could have). It’s a bit speculative, but essentially the definition of workforce could expand to include AI workers employed by humans or companies.
Quality of Life and Social Interactions: On the positive side, if AI agents take over drudgery, people might have more time for family, hobbies, and community. We might see a revival of arts and culture, or just more leisure, akin to how the Industrial Revolution eventually led to weekends and vacations becoming common.
